Research groups at the Institute for Factory Systems and Logistics

The IFA’s work on the holistic design of the value chain is explored in depth across three research groups: Factory Planning, Production Management, and Production and Work Design. In 2014, the new IFA Learning Factory was also established, involving all three research groups. The research groups operate largely autonomously; even staff planning and budget management fall under the responsibility of the individual groups. Flat hierarchies facilitate creative working and learning, enabling every member of staff to take on responsibility. Each group has a spokesperson who represents the group’s interests externally, not through the power to issue orders, but through persuasive arguments. All of this requires a strong culture of communication and trust, thereby fostering staff independence and flexibility. Our goal-oriented developments benefit both our industry partners and the research institutions with which we collaborate. Students gain valuable practical experience and make a personal contribution to the success of the projects.
